What is artificial intelligence ?

In recent times we have heard persistently talk about artificial intelligence (AI). Like all new phenomena, its appearance is accompanied by a series of hypotheses and conjectures that venture the future that will allow us to apply it to our lives.

As a starting point, we can define artificial intelligence as the simulation of processes of human intelligence on the part of machines. This allows carrying out more complex processes than usual for any type of technology, however advanced, such as learning, reasoning or self-correction.

This opens up a world of possibilities, such as the self-management of this innovative technology by its own means, through the autonomous acquisition of information, an increasingly advanced management of it and the possibility of reflection on its content, being able to reach conclusions logic that until now were completely enviable.

Areas of artificial intelligence : 

Like all technological advances, artificial intelligence can be used in different ways, giving us access to greater well-being and progress, or just the opposite. However, before we stop to think about such hypothetical uses, we must attend to the practical applications that artificial intelligence can offer us. Among them we highlight:

1-Machine learning: This branch of artificial intelligence consists of developing techniques that allow the machine to learn in the most human sense of the word. It is possible to develop programs that generalize behaviors from information that is provided to them as an example. Therefore, knowledge is induced. The applications of this technology are very varied: we see it in search engines, in medical diagnoses, in the detection of fraud in the use of credit cards, in the analysis of the stock market, in the classification of DNA sequences, in the recognition of speech and written language, in games and robotics ...

2-Artificial vision: This application of artificial intelligence allows the machine to acquire, process, analyze and understand real images and thus produce new units of information hitherto unknown, with new conclusions, perhaps not observed by the human being. It is possible to acquire, process, analyze and understand the images of the real world, producing with them numerical or symbolic information, like the application of fields such as geometry, statistics, physics. We talk about object recognition, event detection, reconstruction of a scene, restoration of images. The automated classification of images can be very useful in the business environment too, for example, decide which customers to offer each product or service.

3-Recognition of languages: It opens the possibility that the machine makes our language and serves as a vehicle of total communication, like the application of artificial intelligence that involves studying the interactions between computers and human language. It is about designing mechanisms so that there is effective communication computationally - through programs that execute or simulate communication, based not only on the understanding of human language but also on cognitive aspects and the organization of memory. Automatic translation, answer to questions, information retrieval, its applications are many and varied.

4-Robotics: Contrary to what many people think, artificial intelligence is not synonymous with robotics, but the next step in robotics. It is nourished by different disciplines, such as mechanization engineering, electrical engineering, electronic engineering, mechanics, biomedical and computer sciences, among others. In this way, a new generation of robots will be created capable of applying all the advantages that AI brings, and therefore (presumably) capable of facilitating our daily and work life.

5-Chat-bots: It is one of the most explored applications nowadays by all types of companies, which seek to offer a new, more personalized and effective virtual service to their clients. A chat-bot or conversational bot is a program that simulates having a conversation with a person by providing automatic responses to entries made by the user. Usually, the conversation is established by text, although there are also models that have a multimedia user interface. Even text-to-sound, conversion programs are beginning to be used, which gives them greater realism in the interaction with the user.
